Curriculum Wales 2022

2022 will see the statutory introduction of a new framework for learning in Wales which gives each school express permission to design a bespoke curriculum for the needs of each child and the context of the school setting, all within a new national framework called 'A Currciulum for Wales.

This framework, for the first time, has a guiding 'purpose' - in fact there will be four purposes and these will drive all learning & teaching. What children learn will change from school to school but will consist of six Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs) as well as cross-curricular themes of literacy, numeracy and digital competency.

At Arddleen we are confidently moving towards planning and teaching through the new curriculum framework because we believe the opportunities under these new arrangements are exciting and inspiring.

Learning themes across each class will change over time so our learning activities reflect the ideas of our children.

Four Purposes

The four purposes of the curriculum are the shared vision and aspiration for every child and young person. They guide and direct everything we do at Arddleen Primary School. In supporting the development of the four purposes, we set high expectations for all to ensure our curriculum supports lifelong learning.

The four purposes are at the heart of our new curriculum. They are the starting point for all decisions on the content and experiences developed as part of the curriculum to support our children and young people to become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

  • Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work

  • Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

  • Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

The curriculum will be organised into Six Areas of Learning and Experience:

  • Expressive arts

  • Health and well-being

  • Humanities

  • Languages, literacy and communication

  • Mathematics and numeracy

  • Science and technology
